New HVACR policies to reshape Nigerian market

banner

Nigeria's HVACR market is undergoing a structural shift driven by new Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) enforced by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). The mandate establishes a baseline 17 SEER2 rating for residential cooling systems, mandates energy labeling, and sets deadlines to phase out R22 refrigerants.

To maintain compliance and lower operating costs amid fluctuating electricity tariffs, demand is accelerating for eco-friendly R32 refrigerants and protective equipment. Installers are increasingly specifying high-ambient cooling gases, surge-resistant digital controllers, and anti-corrosion coatings engineered specifically for coastal salt exposure and local power grid variances.

Concurrently, trade flows are streamlining via the UAE-Nigeria Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The framework removes tariffs on HVAC mechanical machinery, provides pre-cleared SONCAP documentation, and reduces Jebel Ali-to-Lagos sea transit to two weeks.
